How to Place Images in Master Frames in Adobe InDesign

Beyond creating common elements like page numbers on master pages, placeholders can be created on the masters for both text and images. In this example, we'll look at image placeholders.

  1. Shown here is a large image placeholder frame created on the master pages using the Rectangle Frame Tool.Master Pages with Image Placeholder
  2. Set the fitting by going to the Object menu, then to Fitting, and selecting Frame Fitting Options....Frame Fitting Options in Object Menu
  3. In the dialog box, select Fill Frame Proportionally from the Fitting menu and click OK.Frame Fitting Options Dialog Box
  4. Go to a document page using the master, then go to the File menu and select Place.Place Command in File Menu
  5. Hover over the image placeholder frame and look closely at the loaded cursor. Note the dotted parenthesis around the PICT icon. That means that the frame is detected for the image.Loaded Cursor
