How to Add Manual Frame Breaks in Adobe InDesign

Sometimes you may need to push a paragraph into the next linked text frame or the next column in the frame. Using paragraph returns can create extra work if the text is edited in the future, so InDesign provides a better alternative with frame breaks.

1. First show the hidden characters in the text by going to the Type menu and choosing Show Hidden Characters.
2. Go to the text frame and insert the cursor where you want the text to break. In many cases, frame breaks are used to eliminate widows and orphans. If the text is to break at the end of a paragraph, highlight the paragraph marker (¶). That will replace the paragraph return with a break. Otherwise, there would be both a paragraph return and a break.
3. Go to the Type menu, scroll down to Insert Break Character, and select Frame Break. (Note that there is also an option for a Column Break.)
4. The text below the break has now been pushed into the next linked frame.
