How to Create a Custom Glyph Set in Adobe InDesign
See Adobe InDesign: Tips and Tricks for similar articles. The Glyphs Panel lets you access all the characters available in any given font without knowing the keystroke modifiers. You can also create custom glyph sets of favorites that are used repeatedly. In this example, I'll create a glyph set for alternate characters in the Adobe Caslon Pro font family.
- Select the character to be replaced with an alternate.
- Go to the Window menu, then to Type & Tables, and choose Glyphs to open the Glyphs Panel.
- To filter the glyphs shown in the panel, click the Show menu and choose Alternates for Selection.
- Double-click the character you want to use to replace the selected text.
- As more alternate glyphs are used, they're added to the Recently Used set at the top of the Glyphs Panel.
- Next I'll add a ® by inserting my cursor at the end of the text, then going to the Show menu in the Glyphs Panel, selecting Symbols, and double-clicking the ® character.
- The recently used glyphs can be saved by going to the Glyphs Panel menu and selecting New Glyph Set.
- The next dialog box lets you name the set. It will then be available in the Glyphs Panel menu for use in other documents.
