How to Create a New Document in Microsoft Word

Create a new Word document in just a few simple steps.

This feature works the same in all modern versions of Microsoft Word: 2010, 2013, and 2016.

  1. When you open Microsoft Word, a document is automatically opened as well. As you can see in the screenshot below, the default document is named "Document1".
  2. The arrow in the screenshot points to the location of your cursor when Word opens. To start creating a document, simply begin typing. Cursor Location

Note that in Microsoft Word 2007, you do this by clicking the Microsoft Office button and selecting Save As. Save As
