Course Overview

This course teaches you the basics of Linux administration, and no prior experience is needed. By the end, you'll be able to set up users and lock down file access, keep services running, get a system on the network, install and update software, and move files securely between systems.

Most of the class is hands-on, with 32 labs on live RHEL 10 systems. The first part gets you comfortable on the command line: moving around the shell, working with files, editing configuration files, and combining commands to pull the information you need out of logs and system output. The rest of the course applies those skills to the everyday work of running a server.

This course covers the first half of the RHCSA (EX200) exam objectives. If you're working toward certification, Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Administration II covers the rest.

Course Benefits

  • Work quickly at the Bash prompt by using command history, tab completion, and environment variables.
  • Organize files and directories with cp, mv, rm, mkdir, ln, and wildcards, instead of handling files one at a time.
  • Look up command options and syntax yourself with man pages and built-in documentation.
  • Open and change configuration files in Vim, including moving between command, insert, and ex modes.
  • Chain commands together with redirection and pipes, and use grep, sed, awk, sort, and cut to find what you need in large amounts of output.
  • Add users, organize them into groups, and enforce password aging rules with useradd, usermod, and chage.
  • Decide who can read, change, or run each file by using standard permissions, special permission bits, and umask.
  • Find processes that are slowing a system down and deal with them using ps, top, kill, jobs, and nice.
  • Start, stop, enable, and mask services with systemctl so the right services run at boot.
  • Set up secure remote logins with SSH keys and harden the sshd configuration.
  • Track down problems in the system logs by filtering journalctl output by service, severity, and time, and by adjusting how rsyslog records events.
  • Get a server on the network by setting interfaces, IP addresses, and DNS with nmcli and NetworkManager.
  • Archive, compress, and copy files between systems.
  • Install, update, and remove software, and manage package repositories, with RPM and DNF.
