Course Overview

This course introduces participants to Power BI and its core capabilities. By the end of the course, participants will know how to create a new report, connect to data, perform basic data modeling and cleanup, and build visualizations that clearly communicate insights from their data.

Course Benefits

  • Get up and running with Power BI by building your first report from scratch, connecting to data sources, and publishing to the Power BI service
  • Clean and prepare data for analysis using the Power Query Editor, including removing unwanted rows and columns, splitting columns, and unpivoting data
  • Build a solid foundation in data modeling to ensure your data is structured correctly before creating visuals
  • Write basic DAX formulas to create calculated columns and measures, including aggregate functions like sums and conditional logic
  • Communicate data insights clearly by building a variety of visualizations, including pie charts, bar and column charts, card visuals, and slicers
  • Apply filtering and highlighting techniques to make reports more interactive and easier to interpret

Course Outline

Data, DAX, and M
Participants learn how to connect to simple data sources such as Excel sheets and tables. They learn the basics of data modelling by working in the Power Query editor to clean up data before use, including removing unwanted rows and columns, splitting columns, creating new columns, and unpivoting columns.

Basic M and DAX functions are covered to create new columns. DAX is also used to create measures that return aggregate results, such as a sum of all the values in a column. Conditional logic is used in new columns to return values based on values in neighboring columns.

Visualizations and Reports
Participants explore different methods to display their data through visualizations in reports. Both implicit and explicit measures are used in visuals. Many basic visuals are implemented, including pie and donut charts, bar and column charts, card visuals, and slicers. Applying filtering and highlighting by using visuals is covered.

The instructor provides demonstrations of publishing reports to the Power BI service.
