Intermediate Power BI Desktop Training (PBID201)

This course takes participants deeper into Power BI's data modeling and visualization capabilities. By the end of the course, participants will have a stronger understanding of how to troubleshoot and model complex data, as well as how to build rich, interactive visuals that help others identify trends, surface issues, and make sense of what the data is telling them.

Data, DAX, and M
In this course, participants connect to and work with data sets including connecting to multiple files, folders, and databases. They investigate how relationships within their data model can affect the data that is visible in reports, how to alter relationships through joins and with DAX, and how to create junction tables. They combine data sets by merging and appending queries, and group data by creating data groups and hierarchies.

Participants delve into the Power Query Editor to transform and model data, transpose and unpivot data, and fill in missing data. They create columns and tables using M and DAX and explore date tables and time intelligence functions. More advanced DAX is covered, including using DAX that creates internal tables, iterative functions, and using variables.

Visualizations and Reports
This course offers participants opportunities to add new and more complex visualizations to Power BI reports, including importing custom visuals, and to format visuals in new ways including conditional formatting. Participants add interactivity to reports with buttons, drill-through, and navigation elements. They learn how to use bookmarks to control visualizations’ filter states and visibility. They also learn how to create a mobile view.

Filtering report pages is accomplished in a variety of ways, including visual highlighting, slicers, connections between visuals, applying page filters, and filtering within DAX measures. Also covered is adding dynamic titles to charts and report pages.

Publishing, Security, and Sharing
This course covers publishing reports to the online Power BI service, creating reports directly from data model, and creating dashboards in the online Power BI service. Participants set up row level security in a report and then learn how to connect it to groups and people in the service. The course covers other actions in the service including sharing reports and dashboards, using a published app, utilizing workspaces, creating paginated reports, and interacting with reports and dashboards.

Each student receives a comprehensive set of materials, including course notes and all class examples.
