Group Discussion - Exercise

Group Discussion

Duration: 15 to 25 minutes.

In this exercise, you will develop thoughts on using YouTube.

How will you use YouTube in your organization? Consider:

  1. On which topics might you be able to create videos?
  2. What are some common questions your customers ask that could be answered through a video?
  3. Once you have developed some topic ideas, look up search keywords that might be used to find the video.
  4. Using YouTube's search tool, search for topics related to your industry. Are any of your competitors advertising their videos?
  5. Briefly explore Vimeo, searching for topics that are relevant to your industry. Based on the results, do you think your company would benefit by having a presence on Vimeo as well?

For this solution recap, I want to focus on the competitive standpoint. Like we discussed in the SEO activities, YouTube is owned by Google, and therefore, YouTube has a lot of organic search potential.

Lets hypothetically say we run a dentist office in Los Angeles. Take a look at the first page of a Google search for "Los Angeles dentist."

Right there, on the first page, is a company's YouTube video. And that's pretty powerful these days. In this example, it's a perfect opportunity for another Los Angeles dentist to create and promote a competing video.

And on the flip side, if there are no competing videos showing up on Google searches, thats a great opportunity for you to be the first!

Spend some time searching around on your competition as well and look for opportunities!
