Lesson: Exploring Windows 7 New Features

Welcome to our free Windows 7 tutorial. This tutorial is based on Webucator's Windows 7 course.

The new features of Windows 7 are designed to allow you to customize your computer.

Using Gadgets

Windows Gadgets are mini programs that you can add to your desktop, and that provide quick and easy access to various information.

Set Up a Gadget

One of the most popular Gadgets is the clock.

To set up the clock Gadget:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select Gadgets.
  2. In the Desktop Gadget Gallery, double-click the clock.
  3. The clock Gadget now appears on your desktop.
  4. You can move the Gadget by clicking and dragging it.

Remove a Gadget

To remove a Gadget from the desktop:

  1. Right-click the Gadget and select Close Gadget.
  2. The Gadget is uninstalled from the desktop.

Using Libraries

Libraries are a new feature of Windows 7 that allow you to organize your files in one central location, no matter where they are actually located, making it easier to work with them.

Windows 7 provides four default windows, Documents, Music, Pictures, and Video, and you can create your own.

Create a Library

To create a new library:

  1. Select the Start menu button.
  2. Select your user name.
  3. From the navigation pane on the left, select Libraries.
  4. In the Libraries window, select New Library.
  5. Type a name for your new Library.

Add a Folder to a Library

To add a folder with one of the default Libraries or one that you created:

  1. Select the folder you want to add to a Library, and right-click it.
  2. From the menu, select Include in Library.
  3. From the menu, select which Library you want to add the folder to.
  4. The folder will now be included in the Library, as well as still reside where it is located.

Minimizing Desktop Clutter Using Aero Shake

One of the new features in Windows 7 is called Aero Shake. Aero Shake provides a quick and easy way to organize a cluttered desktop. You use Aero Shake when you have a number of windows open on your desktop.

To use Aero Shake:

  1. Click the top of a pane and shake your mouse.
  2. All other open windows will be minimized, leaving only the window you shook open.

Windows 7 Security Features

Windows 7 provides enhanced security features to help protect your system, as well as your privacy.

Action Center

The Windows Action Center allows you to view security information about your computer in one place.

To use Action Center:

  1. Select the Start menu button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Action Center.
  4. Select the Security section.
  5. Here you can review information about your computer, including whether the firewall is turned on.

Windows Defender

One of the new features is Windows Defender. Windows Defender monitors your computer for malicious attacks, and you can run an on-demand scan, as well.

To scan your computer using Windows Defender:

  1. Select the Start menu button.
  2. In the Search programs and files text box, type "Windows Defender".
  3. Select Windows Defender.
  4. You may be prompted to check for updates. If so, click Check for Updates Now.
  5. To scan your computer, click Scan.
  6. Windows Defender will scan your computer and alert you if any malicious activity is discovered.
