Adjusting Images in Microsoft Word

Duration: 15 to 25 minutes.

In this exercise, you will experiment with numerous ways of adjusting images in Microsoft Word. (If you are using Word 2007, some of these options will not be available to you; use the available options to experiment with making adjustments to the image.)

A PDF containing these exercise instructions is in your Exercises folder (Adjusting Images.pdf). If your manual is not in color, please open that file to see the screenshots in color.

  1. Open or go to Plants in my yard - Intermediate.docx.
  2. Remove the background from the image Lilac closeup.gif so that it looks like it does in the screenshot below:Removed Background
  3. Undo your change.
  4. Change the Brightness and Contrast of the image Lilac closeup.gif so that it looks like it does in the screenshot below:Brightness and Contrast Adjustment
  5. Undo your change.
  6. Recolor the image Lilac closeup.gif so that it looks like it does in the screenshot below:Color Adjustment
  7. Undo your change.
  8. Add an artistic effect to the image Lilac closeup.gif so that it looks like it does in the screenshot below:Artistic Effect
  9. Undo your change.
  10. Adjust the image Lilac closeup.gif by applying the Plastic Wrap Artistic Effect and increasing the contrast 40%. When done, your image should look like it does in the screenshot below:Plastic Wrap Artistic Effect
  11. Save the document as we will continue to build on this document in future exercises.

Solution:

  1. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Remove Background: Remove Background in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  2. Deselect the image to see the change.
  3. Press Ctrl + Z to undo your change.
  4. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Corrections: Corrections in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  5. Leave the pre-selected Sharpen/Soften option as is and select the bottom right Brightness/Contrast option: Brightness/Contrast Options
  6. Press Ctrl + Z to undo your change.
  7. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Color: Color in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  8. Leave the pre-selected Color Saturation and Color Tone options as they are and select the bottom right Turquoise, Accent color 3 Dark option: Recolor Options
  9. Press Ctrl + Z to undo your change.
  10. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Artistic Effects: Artistic Effects in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  11. Select the Glow Edges option in the bottom right: Glow Edges Option
  12. Press Ctrl + Z to undo your change.
  13. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Artistic Effects: Artistic Effects in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  14. Select the Plastic Wrap option in the fourth row on the right: Plastic Wrap Option
  15. Select the image by clicking on it and then on the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, in the Adjust group, click Corrections: Corrections in Adjust Group of Picture Tools Format Tab
  16. Leave the pre-selected Sharpen/Soften option as is and select the middle right Brightness/Contrast option: Brightness/Contrast Options
  17. Save the document.
