Lesson 1: Understanding Diversity

Diversity is important in the workplace but also can be the catalyst of discrimination. It is important to understand what diversity is and how to promote and manage the differences between individuals. This lesson discusses the definitions of diversity and how the laws protect individuals and groups, as well as the advantages and disadvantages associated with diversity in the workplace.

Lesson 2: Cornerstones of Diversity

Diversity experts Armida Russell, Amy Tolbert, and Frank Wilderman have identified four cornerstones of diversity. They are: Knowledge. Understanding. Acceptance. Behavior. In this lesson we will discuss each of these cornerstones in detail.

Lesson 3: Individual Differences

Each and every person on the planet is a unique individual. Each person has similarities and differences when compared to other individuals. There are certain differences that are more prominent within particular groups and learning these can help you work more cohesively as a team.

Lesson 4: Diversity Obstacles

There are many diversity barriers in the workplace. This lesson discusses the negative effects of stereotypes and biases and how best to overcome these problems.

Lesson 5: Communication

Communication is a key ingredient in a successfully diverse work environment. Often people do not understand those who are different from them because they simply do not listen and communicate effectively. This lesson explains how to use active listening, nonverbal communication, and speaking with intent to accurately convey your message and better understand others.

Lesson 6: Diversity Discrimination

Discrimination comes in many forms and it is essential to stop harassment and discrimination immediately. Preventing discrimination before it occurs is even better. This lesson describes how to help prevent discrimination, how to identify discrimination when it occurs, and how to report discrimination.

Lesson 7: Diversity Leadership

Managers and employees can all be diversity leaders. The more people working together to embrace different thoughts and ideas, the more successful a company can be. This lesson offers suggestions on how to manage discrimination, encourage a positive environment, and lead a successful team through the use of diversity.
