How to Write an Arithmetic Expression in Java

An arithmetic expression in Java is a sequence of numeric literals and/or numeric variables separated by arithmetic operators. The result of an arithmetic expression is a number. To create an arithmetic expression and test your expression, follow these four steps.


  1. Open your text editor and create a new file. Type in the following Java statements. You will have coded five arithmetic expressions as annotated by the comments.

  2. Save your file as

  3. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory containing your new Java program. Then type in the command to compile your program and hit Enter.

  4. You can now test your Java program. Type in the command to run the Java runtime launcher and hit Enter. Observe the results of your arithmetic expressions.
