How to Perform a Simple Find in QuickBooks

After you've entered transactions such as checks, invoices, or bills, you may find you need to edit a transaction at a later date. If you need to locate and find a transaction in QuickBooks, use the Find feature. The Find feature lets you search for specific transaction numbers, dates, or items. It can be used to perform custom searches of almost every transaction field used in the various QuickBooks forms.

This feature works the same in versions 2011–2016 of QuickBooks.


The Find window has two tabs; the Simple tab for performing basic searches by transaction type and the Advanced tab for performing detailed searches of specific transaction fields. To perform a simple find, follow these seven steps.

  1. Open the Find dialog box by one of the following methods:
    • From the menu, select Edit > Find.
    • Click the Find icon on the toolbar.

  2. From the Find dialog box, select the Simple tab.

  3. From the Transaction Type drop-down list, select the transaction type you are looking for.

  4. Use the fields above the results table to enter details about the transaction you are looking for. You can leave all search fields blank or you can enter values in as many fields as you deem useful.

  5. Click Find. Results load in the results table.

  6. Double-click a transaction in the results table to open it in the form window.

  7. To clear all fields and restart, click Reset.
