Class Description

Class Overview

This JCL training class teaches students to use Job Control Language (JCL), a scripting language used on IBM mainframes to run batch jobs and start subsystems. Students will get an overview of JCL, learn to code JOB, EXEC, and DD statements, learn multi-step techniques, learn to create JCL procedures, and learn to work with Storage Management Subsystem (SMS).

Class Goals

  • Learn to code JCL statements to define jobs and tasks to the operating system and control their subsequent execution
  • Learn to relate Job Control Language to real world tasks and the various services available through the operating system
  • Learn to describe the general characteristics of common I/0 devices and contrast the physical aspects of files to their logical representation within the computing system
  • Learn to code JCL statements to describe data residing on tape or disk to satisfy individual program needs
  • Learn to code the necessary statements and parameters to control inter and intra step communication within a job
  • Learn to create and manipulate cataloged and instream procedures.
