Installing SQL Server 2005 Express

1. Uninstall beta versions. Before you complete a Microsoft SQL Server download and install any members of the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition family, you must uninstall any previous Beta, CTP or Tech Preview versions of SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, and the .NET Framework 2.0.
2. Download the .NET Framework version 2.0 from the Microsoft Web site.
   1. Download and save the file to your computer.
3. Install the .NET Framework.
   1. Use default settings.
   2. Note: If you receive an error during install, you may need to uninstall any previously installed versions of the .NET Framework.
4. Download Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services from the Microsoft Web site.
   1. Download and save the file to your computer.
5. Install Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition. During Configuration, choose the Next or Finish button after each step until you reach the steps described below.
   1. Registration Information. The Name field is required for the install. Leaving the default value in the name field is fine. Ensure the Hide advanced configuration options is checked.
   2. Feature Selection. When given the option for Feature Selection, Database Services are checked by default. Be sure to also install the Client Components which include, Connectivity Components, Software Development Kit and Management Studio Express. The easiest way to do this is to click on the button next to the entry for Client Components and choose the option labeled Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive.
   3. Authentication Mode. Use Windows Authentication Mode.
   4. Configuration Options. Leave Enable User Instances checked. Check the box labeled Add User to the SQL Server Administrator role.
   5. Error and Usage Reports. The default is fine for class.
   6. Click Install.
   7. Click Finish.
